Description
"The Loved Ones - Magic Box" is a seminal album in the annals of Australian rock music, released in 1967. The Loved Ones, a Melbourne-based band, were known for their unique blend of R&B, rock, and pop, and "Magic Box" stands as a testament to their innovative sound and enduring influence on the Australian music scene.
The album is a compilation of the band's singles and B-sides, capturing the essence of their brief but impactful career. The Loved Ones were fronted by the charismatic Gerry Humphrys, whose distinctive voice and stage presence were pivotal to the band's identity. The lineup also included Ian Clyne on keyboards, Rob Lovett on guitar, Kim Lynch on bass, and Gavin Anderson on drums.
"Magic Box" features some of The Loved Ones' most iconic tracks, including "The Loved One," "Ever Lovin' Man," and "Sad Dark Eyes." "The Loved One," in particular, is a standout track that has achieved legendary status in Australian rock history. Its haunting melody, driven by Clyne's piano riff and Humphrys' powerful vocals, has been covered by numerous artists, including INXS, who brought the song to a new generation in the 1980s.
The album's historical and cultural significance cannot be overstated. The Loved Ones were one of the first Australian bands to achieve success with an original sound, rather than merely imitating British and American acts. Their music was a precursor to the more sophisticated rock that would emerge in the late 1960s and 1970s, influencing bands like The Easybeats and later, AC/DC.
Critically, "Magic Box" was well-received upon its release and has continued to garner praise over the decades. The album is often cited in discussions of the greatest Australian albums of all time. Critics have lauded the band's ability to blend different genres seamlessly and their knack for writing catchy, yet emotionally resonant songs.
Despite their relatively short career, The Loved Ones left an indelible mark on the music industry. "Magic Box" serves as a perfect encapsulation of their talent and innovation. The album's raw energy and emotional depth resonate with listeners even today, making it a timeless piece of rock history.
In terms of awards, while "Magic Box" itself did not win any major accolades at the time of its release, the enduring legacy of The Loved Ones has been recognized in various ways. The band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010, a testament to their lasting impact on Australian music.
In conclusion, "Magic Box" by The Loved Ones is a cornerstone of Australian rock music. Its blend of R&B, rock, and pop, combined with Gerry Humphrys' distinctive voice and the band's innovative sound, make it a must-listen for any music enthusiast. The album's standout tracks, historical significance, and critical acclaim ensure its place in the pantheon of great rock albums.
