Description
The 1973 film "The Sting," starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, was not only a critical and commercial success but also played a crucial role in reviving interest in ragtime music. The soundtrack, featuring the compositions of Scott Joplin and performed by Ron Falson, became a vital part of the movie's appeal. This album captures that musical magic, presenting Joplin's work with a freshness and vitality that make it a delightful listen even outside the context of the film.
Joplin's ragtime compositions, with their syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, are a joy to hear. Ron Falson's performances are marked by precision, flair, and an understanding of the genre that makes the music come alive. The album's most famous track, "The Entertainer," is performed with a bounce and energy that encapsulates the charm of ragtime.
Falson's piano playing is a highlight throughout the album. His interpretations of Joplin's works, such as "Maple Leaf Rag" and "Solace," are both faithful to the original compositions and infused with Falson's own personality. There's a playfulness to his performance that makes the music engaging and accessible, even to those unfamiliar with ragtime.
The production quality of the album is crisp and clean, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the nuances of Joplin's compositions. The sound is warm and intimate, like a private concert in your living room. The remastered versions add even more depth and clarity, enhancing the listening experience.
One of the strengths of this collection is its ability to stand alone as a piece of musical artistry, separate from the film. While it certainly evokes the mood and style of "The Sting," the music's appeal is universal. It's a celebration of a uniquely American art form, performed with skill and passion.
For fans of ragtime, this album is an essential addition to the collection. For those new to the genre, it's a welcoming introduction, a doorway into a world of rhythm and melody that is both historical and timeless.
In summary, "Music From The Sting: Featuring The Music Of Scott Joplin" by Ron Falson is a delightful musical journey. It captures the essence of ragtime with performances that are vibrant, nuanced, and deeply satisfying. Whether you're a fan of the film, a lover of ragtime, or simply someone who appreciates great piano playing, this album is a treasure that will enrich your musical library.
