Description
"Sound & Color" is the second studio album by American rock band Alabama Shakes, released on April 21, 2015, via ATO Records, Rough Trade Records, and MapleMusic Recordings. The album showcases a significant evolution in the band's sound, incorporating a diverse range of musical styles and influences that set it apart from their debut album, "Boys & Girls."
The album opens with the title track, "Sound & Color," which immediately signals a departure from the band's earlier, more straightforward rock and blues influences. The song features lush string arrangements and a dreamy, almost psychedelic atmosphere, setting the tone for the rest of the album. Lead singer Brittany Howard's powerful and emotive vocals are front and center, as they are throughout the album, providing a consistent thread that ties the diverse tracks together.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Don't Wanna Fight," which won two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. The song features a funky, syncopated rhythm and a catchy, soulful chorus that highlights Howard's vocal prowess. The lyrics deal with themes of conflict and resolution, a recurring motif throughout the album.
Another notable track is "Gimme All Your Love," which starts with a slow, bluesy groove before building to a powerful crescendo. The song showcases the band's ability to blend different genres seamlessly, with elements of rock, soul, and even a touch of gospel. Howard's vocal performance is particularly impressive here, as she moves effortlessly from a soft, intimate delivery to a full-throated wail.
"Future People" is another highlight, with its infectious bassline and intricate guitar work. The song has a futuristic, almost sci-fi feel, which is enhanced by the use of electronic effects and layered vocals. The lyrics are somewhat cryptic, but they seem to deal with themes of change and progress, fitting in well with the album's overall theme of exploration and experimentation.
The album's production, handled by the band and Blake Mills, is another strong point. The sound is rich and textured, with a wide dynamic range that allows each instrument to shine. The use of unconventional instruments and effects, such as the vibraphone on the title track and the distorted vocals on "Gemini," adds to the album's unique character.
"Sound & Color" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release. Critics praised the band's willingness to take risks and push their sound in new directions. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, a testament to its commercial success as well as its critical reception.
In addition to its Grammy wins for "Don't Wanna Fight," the album was nominated for several other awards, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Album. These accolades reflect the high regard in which the album is held within the music industry.
Overall, "Sound & Color" is a bold and ambitious album that showcases Alabama Shakes' growth as a band. It is a testament to their willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound, resulting in a record that is both innovative and deeply satisfying. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the band, "Sound & Color" is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
