Description

"Flick of the Switch" is the ninth studio album by the Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released on August 15, 1983. This album marked a significant moment in the band's history, as it was the first album produced by the band members themselves, specifically lead guitarist Angus Young and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young. The album followed the commercially successful "For Those About to Rock We Salute You" and aimed to return to the raw, stripped-down sound that characterized their earlier work.

The album opens with the high-energy track "Rising Power," which sets the tone for the rest of the record with its driving riffs and powerful vocals by Brian Johnson. Johnson, who had joined the band in 1980 following the death of original lead singer Bon Scott, delivers a gritty and forceful performance throughout the album.

One of the standout tracks on the album is the title track, "Flick of the Switch." The song features a memorable riff and a catchy chorus, showcasing the band's ability to craft straightforward, hard-hitting rock songs. The track exemplifies the band's no-frills approach to rock and roll, with a focus on raw power and energy.

Another notable song is "Nervous Shakedown," which features a slower, bluesy groove compared to the rest of the album. The song's heavy, deliberate rhythm and Johnson's raspy vocals create a menacing atmosphere that stands out among the more fast-paced tracks.

"Flick of the Switch" also includes "Guns for Hire," a track that became a staple of the band's live performances. The song's aggressive riff and anthemic chorus make it a fan favorite and a highlight of the album.

The album's production, handled by the Young brothers, aimed to capture the band's live sound and energy. The result is a raw and unpolished record that contrasts with the more polished production of their previous albums. This approach received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the return to a more basic sound, while others felt it lacked the refinement of their earlier work.

Commercially, "Flick of the Switch" did not achieve the same level of success as its predecessors. It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and received a gold certification from the RIAA, indicating sales of over 500,000 copies. While these numbers are respectable, they were a step down from the multi-platinum success of albums like "Back in Black" and "For Those About to Rock We Salute You."

The album's cover art, designed by Atlantic Records' art director Bob Defrin, features a simple, hand-drawn image of a hand flipping a switch. This minimalist design reflects the band's stripped-down approach to the music on the album.

"Flick of the Switch" was also the last AC/DC album to feature drummer Phil Rudd until his return in 1994 for the album "Ballbreaker." Rudd's departure was due to personal issues and conflicts within the band, and his absence marked the end of an era for AC/DC's classic lineup.

In summary, "Flick of the Switch" is an album that captures AC/DC's raw energy and straightforward rock and roll ethos. While it may not have reached the commercial heights of their previous releases, it remains a solid entry in the band's discography. The album's return to a more basic sound, combined with memorable tracks like "Flick of the Switch" and "Guns for Hire," make it a noteworthy chapter in the band's storied career. Fans of AC/DC's early work will appreciate the album's unpolished, high-energy approach, while those looking for the polished production of their later albums may find it less appealing.
