Description
Flying Lotus, the moniker of Los Angeles-based producer Steven Ellison, has long been a pioneering force in the world of electronic music. His 2010 EP, "Pattern+Grid World," is a testament to his innovative approach to sound design and his ability to blend a myriad of genres into a cohesive auditory experience. Released on Warp Records, this EP followed his critically acclaimed album "Cosmogramma," and while it is shorter in length, it is no less impactful.
"Pattern+Grid World" consists of seven tracks, each showcasing Flying Lotus's signature style of intricate beats, lush textures, and experimental rhythms. The EP opens with "Clay," a track that immediately immerses the listener in a world of glitchy beats and swirling synths. The song's structure is complex, with layers of sound that reveal themselves upon repeated listens. This track sets the tone for the rest of the EP, highlighting Ellison's talent for creating detailed and immersive soundscapes.
The second track, "Kill Your Co-Workers," is a standout with its playful yet menacing vibe. The song features a catchy melody that is juxtaposed with aggressive beats, creating a sense of tension and release. The accompanying music video, directed by Beeple, is a visually striking piece that complements the track's themes with its dystopian animation.
"Pie Face" follows, offering a more laid-back groove compared to the previous tracks. Its jazzy undertones and smooth bassline provide a brief respite before diving back into the more frenetic energy of the EP. This track exemplifies Flying Lotus's ability to seamlessly blend different genres, creating a unique sound that is both familiar and entirely his own.
"Time Vampires" is another highlight, with its eerie atmosphere and off-kilter rhythms. The track's title is fitting, as the music seems to warp the listener's perception of time, drawing them into a hypnotic state. The use of unconventional time signatures and dissonant melodies showcases Ellison's willingness to push the boundaries of electronic music.
The penultimate track, "Jurassic Notion/M Theory," is a two-part composition that begins with a chaotic burst of energy before transitioning into a more subdued and contemplative section. The juxtaposition of these two contrasting parts creates a dynamic listening experience that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.
The EP closes with "Camera Day," a track that encapsulates the essence of "Pattern+Grid World." Its intricate beat patterns and lush synth textures create a sense of closure, bringing the EP to a satisfying conclusion. The track's dreamy quality leaves the listener with a sense of wonder, reflecting the imaginative world that Flying Lotus has crafted throughout the EP.
"Pattern+Grid World" is a masterful work that showcases Flying Lotus's ability to innovate and experiment within the electronic music genre. Each track is meticulously crafted, with layers of sound that reveal new details upon each listen. The EP's brevity is one of its strengths, as it leaves the listener wanting more while providing a concise and impactful listening experience.
In conclusion, "Pattern+Grid World" is a must-listen for fans of electronic music and anyone interested in the cutting edge of sound design. Flying Lotus has once again proven himself to be a visionary artist, capable of creating music that is both challenging and deeply rewarding. This EP stands as a testament to his talent and his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in music.
