Description

"The Black Keys - Delta Kream" is a fascinating exploration into the roots of American blues music, showcasing the band's deep appreciation and understanding of the genre. Released on May 14, 2021, this album marks a significant pivot from the band's usual rock-oriented sound to a more stripped-down, bluesy feel. It's a tribute to the Mississippi Hill Country blues that has clearly influenced the band's musical journey.

"Delta Kream" features covers of songs by blues legends like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others. This choice of material speaks volumes about the band's intent to pay homage to the raw, unpolished style of blues that these artists championed. The album's title itself is a nod to the Mississippi Delta, known as the birthplace of the blues, and 'kream' likely a playful twist on 'cream,' suggesting the best of the crop.

The recording of the album is as authentic as the music itself. The Black Keys, consisting of Dan Auerbach (guitar and vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums), recorded "Delta Kream" in about ten hours over two afternoons, aiming to capture the spontaneity and spirit of their blues predecessors. This approach has resulted in a sound that's raw, loose, and incredibly engaging. It feels like you're sitting in on a jam session, with the imperfections adding to the music's charm rather than detracting from it.

Standout tracks include “Crawling Kingsnake” and “Stay All Night,” which showcase Auerbach’s gritty guitar work and soulful vocals, perfectly complemented by Carney’s steady, unobtrusive drumming. These tracks are not just covers but reinterpretations that maintain the spirit of the originals while providing a modern twist that's distinctly The Black Keys.

Critically, "Delta Kream" has been well-received. Publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork praised the album for its authenticity and the band's ability to honor the blues tradition without sounding dated. The album serves as a reminder of the genre's enduring influence on contemporary music, and it's clear that critics and fans alike appreciate this deep dive into the band’s musical roots.

Interestingly, during interviews around the release, Auerbach mentioned that the album was somewhat unplanned. It stemmed from a one-off recording session that felt so right they just kept going. This spontaneity is palpable throughout the album and adds to its charm. The Black Keys have always had a knack for raw, powerful music, and "Delta Kream" is no exception, though it channels this energy through a different genre lens.

"Delta Kream" does more than just revisit the past; it brings it into the present, making classic blues accessible and relevant to today’s audience. It’s a testament to The Black Keys' versatility and their respect for musical heritage. While it might not have the mainstream appeal of some of their earlier, more rock-centric albums, it's a deeply meaningful project for the band and a treat for fans of traditional blues and the band alike.

In conclusion, "Delta Kream" by The Black Keys is a heartfelt tribute to the Mississippi Hill Country blues. It’s an album that not only respects its roots but also celebrates them with every strum and beat. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the band or a newcomer to the blues genre, this album offers a rich, immersive experience that’s both educational and deeply enjoyable.
