Description

Gorillaz's "D-Sides," released on November 19, 2007, is a compilation album that serves as a companion piece to their critically acclaimed second studio album, "Demon Days." This collection features a mix of B-sides, remixes, and unreleased tracks from the "Demon Days" era, offering fans a deeper dive into the creative process and musical experimentation of the virtual band.

The album is divided into two distinct discs. The first disc is a treasure trove of B-sides and rarities that didn't make it onto "Demon Days." It opens with "68 State," an instrumental track that sets a moody, atmospheric tone. This is followed by "People," a reworked version of the hit single "Dare," featuring a more laid-back, reggae-inspired vibe. The track "Hongkongaton" stands out with its fusion of dub and electronic elements, showcasing the band's ability to blend genres seamlessly.

One of the highlights of the first disc is "We Are Happy Landfill," a high-energy track that combines punk rock elements with electronic beats. The song's raw energy and catchy hooks make it a standout. Another notable track is "Stop the Dams," a collaboration with the Swedish band, The Bees. This song addresses environmental concerns and features a haunting melody that lingers long after the track ends.

The second disc of "D-Sides" is dedicated to remixes of tracks from "Demon Days." These remixes offer a fresh perspective on the original songs, with contributions from various artists and producers. The "Kids with Guns (Hot Chip Remix)" transforms the original into a dancefloor-ready track with its infectious beats and electronic flourishes. Similarly, the "Dare (Soulwax Remix)" reimagines the hit single with a more aggressive, industrial sound.

One of the most intriguing remixes on the second disc is the "Feel Good Inc. (Stanton Warriors Remix)." This version retains the infectious groove of the original while adding a layer of breakbeat and bass-heavy production, making it a standout track. The "Dirty Harry (Schtung Chinese New Year Remix)" offers a unique take on the original, incorporating traditional Chinese instruments and melodies to create a fusion of East and West.

"D-Sides" also includes some lesser-known gems that showcase the band's versatility. "Bill Murray" is a melancholic track with a dreamy, almost surreal quality, while "Spitting Out the Demons" features a darker, more aggressive sound. These tracks highlight the band's ability to explore different musical landscapes and push the boundaries of their sound.

Overall, "D-Sides" is a must-have for any Gorillaz fan. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind "Demon Days" and offers a collection of tracks that are both diverse and cohesive. The album's mix of B-sides, rarities, and remixes showcases the band's ability to experiment with different genres and sounds, making it a compelling listen from start to finish.

While "D-Sides" may not have the same level of mainstream appeal as "Demon Days," it is a testament to the band's creativity and willingness to take risks. The album's eclectic mix of tracks offers something for everyone, from die-hard fans to casual listeners. Whether you're looking for high-energy punk rock, laid-back reggae vibes, or innovative remixes, "D-Sides" delivers on all fronts.

In conclusion, "D-Sides" is a rich and rewarding compilation that adds depth to the Gorillaz discography. It captures the essence of what makes the band so unique and showcases their ability to continually evolve and experiment with their sound. For those who appreciate the artistry and innovation of Gorillaz, "D-Sides" is an essential addition to their music collection.
