Description
Ed Sheeran's album "-" (Subtract) marks a poignant and introspective chapter in the artist's discography. Released on May 5, 2023, this album is the final installment in his decade-long mathematical-themed series, following "+," "x," "÷," and "=". Known for his ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies, Sheeran takes a more somber and reflective approach in this album, delving into themes of loss, grief, and personal turmoil.
The production of "-" (Subtract) is notably stripped back compared to Sheeran's previous works. Collaborating with Aaron Dessner of The National, who co-produced the album, Sheeran leans into a more acoustic and folk-inspired sound. This partnership brings a raw and organic feel to the music, allowing Sheeran's emotive vocals and storytelling to take center stage.
The album opens with "Boat," a track that sets the tone for the introspective journey that follows. The song's delicate guitar work and Sheeran's vulnerable lyrics immediately draw listeners in, creating an intimate atmosphere. This is followed by "Salt Water," a hauntingly beautiful song that explores the depths of sorrow and the process of healing.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Eyes Closed," which Sheeran has described as a tribute to a close friend who passed away. The song's poignant lyrics and melancholic melody capture the essence of grief and the struggle to move forward. Another highlight is "Life Goes On," a song that balances sadness with a sense of hope and resilience.
Throughout the album, Sheeran's songwriting shines, with each track offering a glimpse into his personal experiences and emotions. "End of Youth" is a particularly powerful song that reflects on the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of adulthood. The minimalist production and Sheeran's heartfelt delivery make this track a standout moment on the album.
"Colourblind" and "Curtains" are other notable tracks that showcase Sheeran's ability to convey deep emotions through his music. "Colourblind" is a tender love song that contrasts with the darker themes of the album, while "Curtains" delves into the idea of hiding one's true feelings and the struggle to be vulnerable.
The album closes with "The Hills of Aberfeldy," a song that brings a sense of closure and reflection. The track's serene melody and poetic lyrics provide a fitting end to the emotional journey of "-" (Subtract).
Overall, "-" (Subtract) is a deeply personal and introspective album that showcases Ed Sheeran's growth as an artist and songwriter. The collaboration with Aaron Dessner brings a fresh and organic sound to the music, allowing Sheeran's lyrics and vocals to shine. Fans of Sheeran's earlier work will appreciate the raw emotion and honesty that permeates this album, while new listeners will be drawn in by the heartfelt storytelling and beautiful melodies.
