Description

MGMT's self-titled album, "MGMT," released on September 17, 2013, marks the third studio effort by the American rock band. The album follows their critically acclaimed debut "Oracular Spectacular" (2007) and the more experimental "Congratulations" (2010). "MGMT" continues the band's exploration of psychedelic and experimental sounds, but with a more introspective and less accessible approach compared to their earlier work.

The album was produced by MGMT (Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser) and Dave Fridmann, who also worked on their previous albums. The production is characterized by its dense, layered soundscapes, blending elements of psychedelia, electronic music, and indie rock. The album's sound is often described as challenging and unconventional, reflecting the band's desire to push boundaries and defy expectations.

"MGMT" opens with "Alien Days," a track that sets the tone for the album with its dreamy, otherworldly atmosphere. The song features a mix of acoustic and electronic elements, with VanWyngarden's ethereal vocals floating over a backdrop of swirling synths and intricate percussion. The lyrics, which touch on themes of alienation and existentialism, are emblematic of the album's overall mood.

"Cool Song No. 2" follows, with its driving beat and hypnotic melody. The song's lyrics are cryptic and surreal, adding to the album's enigmatic quality. "Mystery Disease" continues this trend, with its dark, brooding sound and introspective lyrics. The track's heavy use of reverb and delay creates a sense of disorientation, further enhancing the album's psychedelic vibe.

"Introspection," a cover of a song by the 1960s band Faine Jade, is one of the more straightforward tracks on the album. The song retains the original's psychedelic rock feel but is given a modern twist with MGMT's signature production style. "Your Life Is a Lie" is another standout track, with its catchy, repetitive chorus and biting lyrics. The song's brevity and directness make it one of the more accessible moments on the album.

"A Good Sadness" and "Astro-Mancy" delve deeper into experimental territory, with their abstract structures and unconventional sounds. These tracks showcase the band's willingness to take risks and explore new sonic landscapes. "I Love You Too, Death" is a haunting ballad, with its sparse arrangement and melancholic lyrics. The song's emotional intensity is a stark contrast to the more upbeat tracks on the album.

"Plenty of Girls in the Sea" offers a brief respite from the album's darker themes, with its whimsical melody and playful lyrics. The song's lightheartedness is a welcome change of pace, providing a moment of levity amidst the album's more serious moments. The album closes with "An Orphan of Fortune," a sprawling, atmospheric track that encapsulates the album's themes of isolation and introspection.

"MGMT" received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. Some praised the band's ambition and willingness to experiment, while others found the album's dense, challenging sound to be off-putting. Despite the divided opinions, the album has garnered a dedicated following among fans who appreciate its complexity and depth.

In conclusion, "MGMT" is a bold and adventurous album that showcases the band's evolution and willingness to push the boundaries of their sound. While it may not have the immediate appeal of their earlier work, it rewards repeated listens with its rich, layered production and thought-provoking lyrics. For those willing to delve into its depths, "MGMT" offers a unique and rewarding listening experience.
