Description

A small organ sigh just before the first chorus of Revelator gives it away; Matthew Houck’s radar for feeling is locked in again. Cut at his Nashville spot with longtime players and partner Jo Schornikow close by, the record leans warm and unhurried. The title track moves on patient organ and piano, Houck threading the melody with that worn, steady tenor he’s honed over decades. This LP pressing opens more space around the harmonies, and the low end sits deeper without clouding the mix.

It belongs next to Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy on your shelf, though Houck aims for a slightly wider horizon, letting the songs breathe rather than brood. There’s also a quiet Melbourne link via Schornikow, whose keys and harmonies shape the corners. Lyrics circle love, doubt and keeping the lights on; arrangements keep their powder dry until it matters.

If you’d rather order online, you can buy Phosphorescent records online with us. Best moments arrive quietly, like the muted guitar figure that threads the middle of Revelator and refuses to hurry. File it under late-night records you actually play, not just talk about. Fans who came in on Song for Zula will recognise the same patience, now more grounded and lived-in. It’s a confident, unfussy set that rewards repeat plays and careful volume.

Shop online or dig for it in our Preston store while stock lasts.
