Description
Diana Krall's 2015 album Wallflower is a delightful exploration of classic pop and rock songs, reimagined through her unique jazz sensibilities. Known for her sultry voice and impeccable piano skills, Krall takes a step away from her traditional jazz repertoire to deliver a collection of covers that feel both intimate and refreshingly new.
The album opens with "California Dreamin'", a song originally made famous by The Mamas & The Papas. Krall's rendition is hauntingly beautiful, with a slower tempo and a lush arrangement that highlights the melancholy undertones of the lyrics. This sets the tone for the album, which is filled with thoughtful interpretations of well-loved tracks.
One of the standout moments on Wallflower is her duet with Michael Bublé on "Alone Again (Naturally)". Their voices blend seamlessly, bringing a tender and heartfelt quality to Gilbert O'Sullivan's classic. Another highlight is her take on "Desperado" by The Eagles, where her emotive delivery and the stripped-down arrangement bring a new depth to the song.
Produced by David Foster, the album benefits from his polished and sophisticated touch. The arrangements are lush yet never overpowering, allowing Krall's voice and piano to remain at the forefront. Foster's production complements Krall's style, creating a cohesive sound that ties the diverse selection of songs together.
Krall also includes a couple of lesser-known tracks, such as "Wallflower" by Bob Dylan, which serves as the album's title track. Her rendition is tender and understated, showcasing her ability to bring out the emotional core of a song. Another gem is "If I Take You Home Tonight", a previously unreleased Paul McCartney composition that fits seamlessly within the album's theme.
While Wallflower may not be a traditional jazz album, it is a testament to Diana Krall's versatility as an artist. Her ability to reinterpret songs from different genres and make them her own is truly remarkable. The album has a warm, nostalgic feel, making it a perfect listen for a quiet evening or a reflective moment.
Overall, Wallflower is a beautifully crafted album that showcases Diana Krall's talent in a new light. It's a must-listen for fans of her work, as well as anyone who appreciates thoughtful and heartfelt music. Krall's interpretations breathe new life into these classic songs, making them feel both timeless and contemporary.
