Description
For a late drive, the hush before her first line in Hurricane tells you exactly how close the mic sits. Ellen Doty’s Come Fall pares the palette to voice, piano, and drums, letting space be the fourth player. On September Moon, the piano leans into dusky voicings while brushed snare nudges the tempo, and her phrasing lands with an easy, unforced swing. Songs glow rather than shout, and the writing stays conversational, closer to a confessional set than a showpiece.
This LP pressing opens the room up; imaging snaps into focus and cymbals decay cleanly. It belongs right beside early Norah Jones on your shelf, though Doty keeps things leaner and more intimate, with more air around every gesture. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Ellen Doty records online with us. Fans of contemporary vocal jazz will appreciate how the melodies carry without excess ornament, and how the drummer paints rather than pushes.
Spin Hurricane again and notice the way her last syllables fall back into the piano, like a quiet answer. The mood makes sense for small rooms, Sunday mornings, and a cool Melbourne evening. Come Fall rewards close listening; the quieter you go, the more the details bloom.
