Description
The barely audible breath before she leans into The Man I Love says everything about Sarah Vaughan’s poise. With Hal Mooney and His Orchestra shaping wide-screen charts, Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin pulls together her Mercury-era readings across a generous 2LP. Someone to Watch Over Me glides with a soft clarinet halo, while A Foggy Day skips along on brushes and winking muted brass. Summertime is unhurried and cool, never oversold. Spread over four sides, this pressing gives the strings more space and the low end sits deeper, so basses and cellos underpin rather than blur. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Sarah Vaughan records online with us. Back to the set, the ballads breathe, and those sly portamentos feel effortless instead of showy. Mooney’s orchestrations leave openings for Vaughan’s conversational phrasing; she slides into off-beat entrances without ever losing the line. It belongs beside Ella Fitzgerald’s Gershwin Songbook for a different temperament, more velvet and sly vibrato than silver clarity. For late evenings this plays beautifully at a conversational volume, the orchestra supportive, the voice front and natural. Art lovers will appreciate the original styling carried through, and the sequencing across four sides encourages full-immersion listens.
