Description

Austra, the Canadian electronic music project led by Katie Stelmanis, has returned with their fourth studio album, "Hirudin." Released on May 1, 2020, this highly anticipated record showcases Austra's evolution and experimentation within the electronic music landscape. With its intricate production, introspective lyrics, and captivating vocals, "Hirudin" proves to be a compelling addition to Austra's discography.

The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful track "Anywayz," setting the tone for what's to come. Stelmanis' ethereal vocals soar over a pulsating beat, creating an atmosphere that is both melancholic and empowering. The lyrics delve into themes of self-discovery and resilience, reflecting the album's overall introspective nature.

One of the standout tracks on "Hirudin" is "Risk It." The song combines infectious synth melodies with Stelmanis' powerful vocals, resulting in an irresistible blend of pop and electronic elements. The lyrics explore the complexities of relationships and the fear of vulnerability, adding an emotional depth to the catchy hooks.

Another highlight of the album is "Mountain Baby," a track that showcases Austra's ability to create atmospheric soundscapes. The song builds gradually, with layers of synths and percussion intertwining to create a sense of tension and release. Stelmanis' vocals shine once again, conveying a sense of longing and introspection.

Throughout "Hirudin," Austra experiments with different sonic textures and production techniques, pushing the boundaries of their sound. Tracks like "I Am Not Waiting" and "All or Nothing" incorporate elements of house and techno, adding a dancefloor-ready energy to the album. These tracks demonstrate Austra's versatility as they seamlessly blend electronic genres while maintaining their signature sound.

Lyrically, "Hirudin" explores themes of personal growth, resilience, and the complexities of human relationships. Stelmanis' introspective and poetic lyrics provide a glimpse into her inner world, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences. The album's title, "Hirudin," refers to a natural anticoagulant found in leeches, symbolizing the healing and transformative power of self-discovery.

One of the album's most poignant moments comes in the form of "How Did You Know?" A stripped-down piano ballad, Stelmanis' vulnerable vocals take center stage as she reflects on the pain of lost love. The raw emotion conveyed in this track is a testament to Austra's ability to connect with listeners on a deeply personal level.

"Hirudin" concludes with the atmospheric and introspective track "Messiah." The song combines haunting melodies with Stelmanis' evocative vocals, creating a sense of catharsis and closure. The lyrics touch upon themes of self-acceptance and finding solace within oneself, leaving listeners with a sense of hope and empowerment.

In terms of production, "Hirudin" is a meticulously crafted album. Austra's attention to detail is evident in the intricate layers of synths, percussion, and vocal harmonies that make up each track. The album's production creates a rich sonic landscape that draws listeners in and keeps them engaged from start to finish.

Overall, Austra's "Hirudin" is a captivating and introspective album that showcases the evolution of the project. With its intricate production, powerful vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics, this record is a testament to Austra's ability to push the boundaries of electronic music. "Hirudin" is a must-listen for fans of Austra and electronic music enthusiasts alike, as it offers a unique and immersive musical experience.
