Description

Hockey Dad's debut album, "Dreamin'," released in 2016, is a vibrant and energetic collection that captures the essence of surf rock with a modern twist. The Australian duo, consisting of Zach Stephenson on vocals and guitar and Billy Fleming on drums, hails from the coastal town of Windang, New South Wales. Their music is heavily influenced by their beachside upbringing, and "Dreamin'" is a testament to their laid-back yet spirited style.

The album opens with "Can't Have Them," a track that immediately sets the tone with its catchy hooks and upbeat tempo. The song's infectious energy is a hallmark of Hockey Dad's sound, drawing listeners in with its youthful exuberance. This track, along with others on the album, showcases the band's ability to blend garage rock with surf pop, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh.

"Dreamin'" is characterized by its raw production and straightforward songwriting. The album was recorded in just a few days, capturing the spontaneity and authenticity of the duo's live performances. This approach gives the album a sense of immediacy and intimacy, as if the listener is right there in the room with the band. The production, handled by Tom Iansek of Big Scary, complements the band's style perfectly, allowing the melodies and rhythms to shine through without unnecessary embellishments.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "I Need a Woman," which features jangly guitars and a driving beat that propels the song forward. The lyrics, while simple, convey a sense of longing and youthful desire that is relatable and genuine. Another highlight is "Laura," a track that slows things down slightly, offering a more introspective moment amidst the high-energy songs that dominate the album. The song's dreamy quality and melodic guitar lines make it a memorable addition to the record.

"Dreamin'" received positive reviews from critics, who praised the album for its catchy melodies and the duo's chemistry. The album's straightforward and unpretentious nature was seen as a strength, with many reviewers noting that Hockey Dad managed to capture the carefree spirit of their influences while adding their own unique touch. The album's reception helped establish Hockey Dad as a promising act in the indie rock scene, particularly within the Australian music landscape.

While "Dreamin'" did not win any major awards, its impact on the surf rock genre and the indie music scene was significant. The album helped to solidify Hockey Dad's reputation as a band to watch, leading to successful tours both in Australia and internationally. Their ability to translate the energy of their recordings into live performances further endeared them to fans and critics alike.

Culturally, "Dreamin'" resonates with the surf and skate communities, reflecting the lifestyle and attitudes of young people growing up in coastal areas. The album's themes of friendship, love, and the pursuit of fun are universal, yet they are delivered with a distinctly Australian flavor that sets Hockey Dad apart from their contemporaries.

In conclusion, "Dreamin'" is a strong debut that captures the essence of Hockey Dad's sound and spirit. The album's infectious energy, combined with its relatable themes and raw production, make it a standout in the indie rock genre. While it may not have garnered major awards, its cultural significance and impact on the surf rock scene are undeniable. Hockey Dad's "Dreamin'" is a testament to the power of simplicity and authenticity in music, and it remains a beloved album for fans of the genre.
