Description
Peter Garrett's album "A Version of Now" was released on July 15, 2016. This album marked a significant moment in Garrett's career, as it was his first solo project after a long hiatus from music. Many know Garrett as the charismatic frontman of the iconic Australian rock band Midnight Oil, as well as for his political career, including his tenure as a member of the Australian House of Representatives and as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
"A Version of Now" is a deeply personal album that reflects Garrett's journey and experiences over the years. The album was recorded in a relatively short period, capturing a raw and immediate sound that resonates with authenticity. Garrett collaborated with a talented group of musicians, including Martin Rotsey, his former bandmate from Midnight Oil, and Peter Luscombe, a well-known Australian drummer. The production was handled by Burke Reid, who is known for his work with other Australian artists like Courtney Barnett.
The album opens with the track "Tall Trees," which sets the tone with its driving rhythm and introspective lyrics. Garrett's distinctive voice, which fans of Midnight Oil will instantly recognize, carries a sense of urgency and passion. The song "No Placebo" is another standout, featuring a catchy melody and thought-provoking lyrics that touch on themes of authenticity and truth in a world filled with superficiality.
One of the most poignant tracks on the album is "Homecoming," which reflects Garrett's reflections on returning to music and the changes he has witnessed in both his personal life and the world around him. The song "Great White Shark" is another highlight, with its powerful imagery and energetic instrumentation.
Critically, "A Version of Now" was well-received, with many reviewers praising Garrett's ability to craft songs that are both personal and universally relatable. The album was noted for its honest and straightforward approach, with Garrett's lyrics offering insights into his thoughts and feelings after years away from the music scene.
In terms of cultural significance, "A Version of Now" represents a bridge between Garrett's past as a rock musician and his more recent endeavors in politics and activism. The album doesn't shy away from addressing social and environmental issues, themes that have always been close to Garrett's heart. This connection to his roots in activism is evident throughout the album, making it not just a musical project but also a statement of Garrett's ongoing commitment to the causes he believes in.
Overall, "A Version of Now" is a compelling listen for both longtime fans of Peter Garrett and those new to his music. It offers a glimpse into the mind of an artist who has spent decades balancing the worlds of music and politics, and it does so with sincerity and a sense of purpose. Whether you're drawn in by the catchy hooks or the thoughtful lyrics, this album is a testament to Garrett's enduring talent and passion for making music that matters.
