Description

Real Estate, the indie rock band hailing from New Jersey, has returned with their fifth studio album, "The Main Thing." Released on February 28, 2020, this album showcases the band's signature dreamy sound while exploring new sonic territories. With a runtime of just over 50 minutes, "The Main Thing" offers a collection of introspective and contemplative tracks that delve into themes of self-reflection and the search for meaning.

The album opens with the title track, "The Main Thing," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. The song features jangly guitars, lush harmonies, and a laid-back rhythm section, creating a nostalgic and dreamy atmosphere. Lead vocalist Martin Courtney's soothing voice effortlessly guides the listener through the introspective lyrics, reflecting on the importance of finding purpose in life.

Throughout the album, Real Estate showcases their ability to craft intricate and melodic compositions. Tracks like "Paper Cup" and "Gone" highlight the band's knack for creating catchy hooks and memorable melodies. The interplay between the shimmering guitars and the tight rhythm section creates a captivating sonic landscape that draws the listener in.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Also a But." This song features a more experimental approach, with its swirling synths and intricate guitar work. The band's willingness to push their boundaries and incorporate new elements into their sound is evident here, adding a refreshing dynamic to the album.

Lyrically, "The Main Thing" explores themes of self-discovery and the search for meaning in a fast-paced world. The introspective nature of the lyrics allows the listener to connect on a personal level, as they navigate their own journey of self-reflection. The album's contemplative tone is further enhanced by the band's ability to create a sense of space and tranquility within their music.

Real Estate's musicianship shines throughout the album, with each member contributing their unique talents to create a cohesive and polished sound. The intricate guitar work of Julian Lynch and Martin Courtney, combined with the solid rhythm section provided by bassist Alex Bleeker and drummer Jackson Pollis, creates a rich and layered musical landscape that is both soothing and captivating.

"The Main Thing" also benefits from its production, which is clean and well-balanced. The album's sound is warm and inviting, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the music. The production captures the essence of Real Estate's live performances, showcasing their ability to create an intimate and immersive experience.

While "The Main Thing" is a strong album overall, it does have a tendency to blend together at times. Some tracks may lack the distinctiveness that would make them stand out on their own. However, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise solid body of work.

In conclusion, Real Estate's "The Main Thing" is a captivating and introspective album that showcases the band's growth and maturity. With its dreamy soundscapes, catchy melodies, and thoughtful lyrics, this album is a testament to the band's ability to create music that resonates with the listener. While it may not break new ground for the genre, it is a welcome addition to Real Estate's discography and a must-listen for fans of indie rock.
