Description
Skegss' "My Own Mess" is a vibrant and energetic album that captures the essence of the Australian surf rock scene. Released on September 7, 2018, by Ratbag Records, this debut studio album from the Byron Bay trio showcases their knack for crafting catchy, laid-back tunes with a raw, unpolished edge.
The band, consisting of Ben Reed (vocals, guitar), Toby Cregan (bass, vocals), and Jonny Lani (drums), has built a reputation for their high-energy live performances and DIY ethos. "My Own Mess" encapsulates this spirit, delivering a collection of tracks that are both relatable and infectious.
The album opens with "Up in the Clouds," a track that immediately sets the tone with its jangly guitars and Reed's distinctive vocal delivery. The song's lyrics, which touch on themes of escapism and self-discovery, resonate with the band's youthful audience. This is followed by "Smogged Out," a fast-paced number that highlights the band's punk influences.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Road Trip," a song that perfectly captures the carefree, adventurous spirit of the band's music. With its driving rhythm and sing-along chorus, it's a track that's sure to be a crowd favorite at live shows. "Stop" is another highlight, featuring a more introspective lyrical approach and showcasing the band's ability to blend melody with raw energy.
The title track, "My Own Mess," is a reflective piece that delves into themes of personal growth and self-acceptance. It's a testament to the band's songwriting prowess, combining heartfelt lyrics with a catchy, anthemic sound. "Paradise" and "Margarita" continue this trend, offering up more of the band's signature blend of surf rock and punk influences.
Throughout the album, Skegss maintain a consistent sound that is both nostalgic and fresh. Their influences, which range from classic punk bands like The Ramones to contemporary acts like FIDLAR, are evident in their music, but they manage to carve out a unique identity that sets them apart from their peers.
The production on "My Own Mess" is deliberately lo-fi, giving the album a raw, unpolished feel that complements the band's DIY ethos. This approach works well for the most part, although there are moments where a bit more polish could have enhanced the overall sound. Nevertheless, the album's rough edges are part of its charm, and they contribute to the sense of authenticity that permeates the record.
Lyrically, "My Own Mess" is a mix of introspection and carefree fun. The band's ability to balance these two elements is one of their strengths, and it makes for an engaging listening experience. Whether they're singing about the joys of a road trip or the challenges of personal growth, Skegss manage to strike a chord with their audience.
In conclusion, "My Own Mess" is a strong debut from Skegss that showcases their talent for crafting catchy, energetic tunes with a raw, unpolished edge. The album captures the essence of the Australian surf rock scene and offers a glimpse into the band's potential for future growth. With its mix of introspective lyrics and carefree fun, "My Own Mess" is a record that's sure to resonate with fans of the genre and beyond.
