Description
"Sawdust" by The Killers is a fascinating compilation album that showcases the band's versatility and creative range. Released on November 9, 2007, this collection of B-sides, rarities, and previously unreleased tracks offers a deeper dive into the band's work during the early years of their career, particularly around the time of their first two studio albums, "Hot Fuss" and "Sam's Town."
What makes "Sawdust" stand out is its eclectic nature. The album doesn't follow a strict thematic or stylistic thread, which is part of its charm. Instead, it feels like a treasure trove of hidden gems, each track offering something unique. For fans of The Killers, it's a chance to explore the band's creative process and hear songs that might not have fit into their main albums but still hold their own as compelling pieces of music.
One of the highlights of the album is "Tranquilize", a collaboration with the legendary Lou Reed. This track is dark and brooding, with Reed's distinctive voice adding a layer of gravitas to the song. It's a bold opener that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Another standout is "Shadowplay", a cover of the Joy Division classic. The Killers manage to pay homage to the original while infusing it with their own style, making it a memorable addition to the album.
"Sawdust" also includes "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf", the first part of the band's "Murder Trilogy", which also features "Midnight Show" and "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" from "Hot Fuss." Hearing this track in the context of the trilogy adds a new dimension to the story and showcases the band's knack for storytelling through music.
The album isn't just about B-sides and rarities; it also features some reimagined versions of existing songs. For instance, "Sam's Town (Abbey Road Version)" offers a stripped-down, more intimate take on the original, highlighting the song's emotional core. Similarly, "Romeo and Juliet", a cover of the Dire Straits classic, is a heartfelt rendition that demonstrates Brandon Flowers' ability to convey deep emotion through his vocals.
Production-wise, "Sawdust" benefits from the involvement of several notable producers, including Flood, Alan Moulder, and Stuart Price. Their contributions help to create a cohesive sound across the album, despite the diversity of the tracks. The production quality is consistently high, which is a testament to the band's commitment to their craft.
While "Sawdust" might not have the same cultural impact as "Hot Fuss" or "Sam's Town", it serves as an important piece of The Killers' discography. It provides insight into the band's evolution and offers fans a chance to hear songs that might have otherwise remained in the vault. For those who appreciate the band's work, "Sawdust" is a rewarding listen that showcases their talent and creativity in a new light.
In conclusion, "Sawdust" is more than just a collection of odds and ends; it's a testament to The Killers' ability to craft compelling music across a variety of styles and themes. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their music, this album is well worth exploring. It's a reminder of why The Killers have remained one of the most beloved bands of their generation.
