Description

Killer Be Killed, the self-titled debut album by the supergroup formed by Max Cavalera (Soulfly, ex-Sepultura), Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), and Dave Elitch (ex-The Mars Volta), is a relentless and powerful display of modern metal. Released in 2014, this album showcases the combined talents of these seasoned musicians, resulting in a unique and captivating musical experience.

From the very first track, "Wings of Feather and Wax," Killer Be Killed grabs the listener's attention with its aggressive and intense sound. The album seamlessly blends elements of thrash metal, groove metal, and alternative metal, creating a diverse sonic landscape that keeps the listener engaged throughout. The musicianship on display is exceptional, with each member bringing their own distinct style and expertise to the table.

One of the standout aspects of Killer Be Killed is the vocal performances. With three vocalists in the band, the album offers a dynamic range of styles and approaches. Max Cavalera's signature growls and aggressive delivery perfectly complement Greg Puciato's versatile and emotive vocals, while Troy Sanders adds a melodic touch with his clean singing. The vocal interplay between the three is a highlight of the album, adding depth and variety to the songs.

The songwriting on Killer Be Killed is top-notch, with each track offering something different while maintaining a cohesive sound. Tracks like "Face Down" and "Melting of My Marrow" showcase the band's ability to create heavy, groove-laden riffs that will have heads banging. On the other hand, songs like "Curb Crusher" and "Save the Robots" demonstrate the band's knack for crafting catchy hooks and memorable choruses. The album also features some unexpected moments, such as the atmospheric and haunting "Dust Into Darkness," which adds a welcome change of pace.

Lyrically, Killer Be Killed explores a range of themes, from personal struggles to societal issues. The lyrics are thought-provoking and introspective, adding depth to the music. The band's ability to tackle these topics with sincerity and conviction is commendable, and it adds an extra layer of substance to the album.

The production on Killer Be Killed is excellent, with Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Gojira) at the helm. The album sounds crisp and powerful, allowing each instrument to shine through. The mix strikes a perfect balance between heaviness and clarity, ensuring that every riff, drum fill, and vocal line is heard with precision.

While Killer Be Killed is a remarkable debut, it is not without its flaws. Some listeners may find the album's intensity overwhelming, as it rarely lets up throughout its runtime. Additionally, the sheer amount of talent in the band can occasionally lead to moments where it feels like each member is vying for the spotlight, resulting in a slight lack of cohesion in certain sections.

In conclusion, Killer Be Killed's self-titled debut album is a force to be reckoned with. It showcases the immense talent and chemistry of its members, resulting in a powerful and diverse metal experience. From the aggressive riffs to the captivating vocal performances, every aspect of the album is executed with precision and passion. While it may not be for everyone due to its unrelenting intensity, fans of modern metal will find much to appreciate in Killer Be Killed's debut. This album serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential for greatness when talented musicians come together.
