Pressed on Classic Black Vinyl.
Bruce Springsteen's "Human Touch" was released on March 31, 1992, alongside its companion album "Lucky Town." This period marked a significant moment in Springsteen's career, as it was his first major release since the 1987 album "Tunnel of Love." Notably, "Human Touch" was recorded without the E Street Band, which had been a staple of Springsteen's sound for many years. Instead, he collaborated with a variety of session musicians, including Randy Jackson on bass and Jeff Porcaro on drums.
"Human Touch" explores themes of love, longing, and the search for connection, which are quintessential elements of Springsteen's songwriting. The title track, "Human Touch," is a standout with its catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics, capturing the essence of yearning for human connection. This song, along with "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)," received significant airplay and helped the album achieve commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
Critically, "Human Touch" received mixed reviews. Some critics appreciated Springsteen's exploration of new musical territories and his introspective lyrics, while others felt the album lacked the raw energy and cohesion of his earlier work with the E Street Band. Rolling Stone magazine, for instance, noted the polished production and the shift in Springsteen's sound, which was a departure from the gritty rock anthems that had defined his career in the 1970s and 1980s.
Despite the mixed critical reception, "Human Touch" holds a special place in Springsteen's discography as it represents a period of transition and experimentation. The album's production was helmed by Springsteen himself, along with Jon Landau and Chuck Plotkin, who had been long-time collaborators. This period also saw Springsteen grappling with personal changes, including his move to Los Angeles and his evolving family life, which influenced the themes and tone of the album.
One of the interesting aspects of "Human Touch" is its simultaneous release with "Lucky Town." While "Human Touch" was recorded over a longer period and features a more polished sound, "Lucky Town" was recorded quickly and has a rawer, more spontaneous feel. The dual release allowed fans to experience two different sides of Springsteen's artistry at once.
In terms of cultural significance, "Human Touch" reflects the early 1990s era, a time when many artists were experimenting with new sounds and production techniques. Springsteen's decision to work without the E Street Band and to embrace a more mainstream rock sound was indicative of the broader musical trends of the time.
Overall, "Human Touch" is an album that showcases Bruce Springsteen's willingness to evolve and take risks as an artist. While it may not have the iconic status of "Born to Run" or "Born in the U.S.A.," it offers a glimpse into a different facet of Springsteen's musical journey. For fans and newcomers alike, "Human Touch" provides an opportunity to explore the depth and diversity of Springsteen's work during a pivotal moment in his career.
