Description
"Nuggets: Vol. 2 Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1964-1968" is a fascinating compilation album that was released on July 24, 2001. This album serves as a sequel to the original "Nuggets" compilation, which was released in 1972 and is often credited with helping to define the garage rock and psychedelic music genres. Compiled by the esteemed music historian and producer Lenny Kaye, this second volume continues the journey through the vibrant and experimental sounds of the mid-1960s.
The album features a treasure trove of tracks that encapsulate the spirit of the psychedelic era, showcasing a mix of well-known hits and obscure gems from various artists. It includes tracks from bands that were pivotal in shaping the sound of the time, such as The Electric Prunes, The Shadows of Knight, and The 13th Floor Elevators. Each song is a snapshot of a moment in music history, reflecting the cultural shifts and artistic experimentation that characterized the 1960s.
One of the standout tracks on the album is undoubtedly "You're a Very Lovely Woman" by The Merry-Go-Round, which perfectly captures the jangly guitar sound and whimsical lyrics that were hallmarks of the era. Another highlight is "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" by The Electric Prunes, a song that has become iconic in its own right, often cited as a quintessential example of psychedelic rock. The album also features lesser-known tracks that are equally compelling, such as "The Wind Blows Your Hair" by The Shadows of Knight, which showcases the raw energy and youthful exuberance of garage rock.
Critically, "Nuggets: Vol. 2" has been well-received, with many reviewers praising its curation and the way it captures the essence of a transformative period in music. Major publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork have lauded the compilation for its historical significance and the way it introduces listeners to a wealth of music that might otherwise be overlooked. The album is often recommended for both newcomers to the genre and seasoned fans looking to deepen their understanding of psychedelic music.
One interesting aspect of this compilation is its role in the revival of interest in garage rock and psychedelic music in the early 2000s. The success of the original "Nuggets" compilation had already paved the way for a resurgence of these sounds, and "Nuggets: Vol. 2" helped to further cement the legacy of this music. It has been influential in inspiring a new generation of musicians and bands who draw from the raw, unpolished sounds of the 1960s.
In terms of production, the album was meticulously put together, with Lenny Kaye's expertise shining through in the selection of tracks. Kaye, who is also known for his work with the Patti Smith Group, has a deep understanding of the music from this era, and his passion for the genre is evident in the way the songs are presented. The compilation not only serves as a historical document but also as a celebration of the creativity and innovation that defined the psychedelic era.
For those who enjoy diving into the cultural context of music, "Nuggets: Vol. 2" offers a rich tapestry of sounds that reflect the social and political upheaval of the 1960s. The music is infused with a sense of experimentation and a desire to break free from the norms of the past, making it a fascinating listen for anyone interested in the evolution of rock music.
In conclusion, "Nuggets: Vol. 2 Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1964-1968" is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a journey through a pivotal time in music history. With its blend of well-known tracks and hidden gems, it invites listeners to explore the depths of psychedelic rock and garage music. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, this compilation is sure to provide an enriching listening experience that resonates with the spirit of the 1960s.
