Known for their ability to evolve and adapt their sound over the years, AFI continues to explore new musical territories with this release. The EP consists of five tracks, each showcasing the band's signature blend of punk rock, post-hardcore, and alternative influences.
The opening track, "Trash Bat," immediately sets the tone with its energetic and fast-paced rhythm. It's a quintessential AFI song, featuring Davey Havok's distinctive vocals and Jade Puget's sharp guitar work. The track is a reminder of the band's punk roots, while also incorporating modern production elements that keep it fresh and relevant.
"Break Angels" follows, offering a more melodic and introspective experience. This track highlights the band's ability to balance aggression with melody, creating a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. The lyrics, as always with AFI, are poetic and open to interpretation, allowing listeners to find their own meaning within the music.
The third track, "Back Into the Sun," stands out as a more experimental piece. It features a slower tempo and a more atmospheric sound, showcasing the band's willingness to push their creative boundaries. The song's structure and instrumentation demonstrate AFI's growth as musicians, as they seamlessly blend different genres and styles.
"Get Dark," the lead single from the EP, is perhaps the most accessible track for new listeners. It combines catchy hooks with a driving beat, making it an instant favorite among fans. The song's infectious energy and memorable chorus make it a standout track, capturing the essence of AFI's ability to create music that is both thought-provoking and entertaining.
The EP concludes with the title track, "The Missing Man," which is arguably the most emotionally charged song on the record. It features a slower, more contemplative pace, with Havok's vocals conveying a sense of longing and introspection. The track's lyrical content and musical arrangement leave a lasting impression, making it a fitting end to the EP.
Critically, "The Missing Man" was well-received, with many reviewers praising the band's continued evolution and ability to produce compelling music after more than two decades in the industry.
