Description
INXS's album "X" was released on September 25, 1990, and it stands as a testament to the band's ability to blend rock with pop sensibilities, creating a sound that was both commercially appealing and artistically satisfying. This album followed the massive success of "Kick," and while it had big shoes to fill, "X" managed to carve out its own place in the music landscape of the early '90s.
One of the standout tracks on "X" is "Suicide Blonde," which was a major hit and showcased the band's knack for catchy hooks and infectious rhythms. The song was inspired by Kylie Minogue, who was dating lead singer Michael Hutchence at the time, and the title refers to a hair dye she used. The track's driving beat and Hutchence's charismatic vocals made it an instant classic, and it quickly climbed the charts worldwide.
Another notable song is "Disappear," which also enjoyed significant radio play and chart success. Co-written by Hutchence and Jon Farriss, "Disappear" is a perfect example of the band's ability to craft songs that are both introspective and radio-friendly. The song's lyrics explore themes of love and longing, wrapped in a melody that's both haunting and uplifting.
The album "X" was produced by Chris Thomas, who had previously worked with the band on "Kick." Thomas's production style helped to polish the band's sound without losing the raw energy that made INXS so appealing. The album's production is slick, with a clear emphasis on creating tracks that would resonate on both radio and in live performances.
Critically, "X" received a warm reception, though it was often compared to its predecessor, "Kick." While some critics felt it didn't quite reach the same heights, others praised it for its consistency and the band's ability to evolve their sound. Publications like Rolling Stone and AllMusic noted the album's strong songwriting and the band's tight musicianship.
"X" also earned INXS several award nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Suicide Blonde." The album's success helped to cement INXS's status as one of the leading rock bands of the era, and it contributed to their legacy as a band that could consistently deliver hits.
In terms of cultural significance, "X" came at a time when the music industry was on the cusp of major changes, with grunge and alternative rock beginning to rise. INXS managed to maintain their relevance by sticking to their strengths while also experimenting with new sounds and ideas. This adaptability is part of what has kept their music enduring over the years.
Overall, "X" is a solid entry in the INXS discography. It captures the band at a time when they were at the height of their powers, delivering songs that are both memorable and meaningful. For fans of the band, "X" is a must-listen, and for those new to INXS, it's a great introduction to their unique blend of rock and pop. Whether you're drawn in by the catchy hooks or the charismatic presence of Michael Hutchence, "X" offers something for everyone.
