Description

PLEASE NOTE: The following album review is general information about the original record release and may not be releveant to this specfic vinyl release for Record Store Day 2024.

"94 East featuring Prince, Minneapolis Genius" is a compilation album that showcases the early work of Prince, before he became a global superstar. The collection, released in various forms over the years with the most notable version coming out in 1985, highlights recordings from 1975-1977, featuring Prince on guitar and keyboards. These sessions are among Prince's first professional recordings, providing a fascinating glimpse into his early development as an artist.

The tracks on "Minneapolis Genius" are characterized by their raw funk sound, blending elements of R&B, funk, and soul, indicative of the Minneapolis sound that Prince would later become synonymous with. The album opens with "Just Another Sucker," a track that immediately sets the tone with its funky bass line, tight rhythm, and Prince's already evident prowess on the guitar.

One of the standout tracks, "If You Feel Like Dancin'," showcases the infectious energy and groove that would become a hallmark of Prince's music. The track's vibrant instrumentation and catchy chorus highlight Prince's early understanding of how to craft a compelling funk tune.

The production on the album, while raw, captures the vibrancy and spontaneity of the sessions. The sound is unpolished compared to Prince's later, more sophisticated work, offering listeners a rare insight into his formative years as a musician. The minimalistic production approach allows the natural talent of the young Prince and the other musicians in 94 East to shine through.

"Dance to the Music of the World," another highlight, exemplifies the experimental nature of these early recordings. The track features a blend of funk rhythms with psychedelic influences, showcasing Prince's early willingness to push musical boundaries and experiment with different sounds.

Lyrically, the songs on "Minneapolis Genius" reflect the themes of love, dance, and celebration typical of funk music of the time. Prince's contributions, both in playing and possibly in songwriting, already show signs of the genius that would later define his career, with catchy hooks and groovy melodies that demand the listener's attention.

In retrospect, "94 East featuring Prince, Minneapolis Genius" is a crucial piece in understanding Prince's musical journey. The compilation not only highlights his incredible talent as a musician from a young age but also provides context for the evolution of his sound and the development of the Minneapolis music scene.

Overall, "Minneapolis Genius" stands as a testament to Prince's early promise as a musician and his contributions to the burgeoning Minneapolis sound. The album's collection of raw, funky tracks offers a unique insight into the origins of one of music's most innovative and influential figures, making it an essential listen for fans of Prince and funk music enthusiasts alike.
