Description

PLEASE NOTE: The following album review is general information about the original record release and may not be releveant to this specfic vinyl release for Record Store Day 2024.

Joe Pesci's "Little Joe Sure Can Sing!" released in 1968, showcases a surprising and lesser-known facet of the acclaimed actor's talents: his singing ability. Best known for his roles in iconic films such as "Goodfellas" and "Casino," Pesci's venture into music with this album presents him in a completely different light, performing covers of contemporary pop hits and standards with his distinct vocal style.

The album opens with a rendition of "Got to Get You into My Life," where Pesci's enthusiasm and unique vocal delivery immediately capture the listener's attention. His approach to the song, originally by The Beatles, adds a playful and engaging twist, setting the tone for an album full of surprises.

One of the standout tracks, "Fool on the Hill," again sees Pesci taking on The Beatles' repertoire, offering a version that is both respectful of the original and infused with his own personality. His interpretation brings a new dimension to the song, highlighting his ability to convey emotion and depth through his vocals.

The production on "Little Joe Sure Can Sing!" is reflective of its era, with lush arrangements and a focus on showcasing Pesci's voice within the context of the popular music of the time. The backing instrumentation, featuring brass, strings, and rhythm sections, complements Pesci's vocal performances, creating a sound that is both vibrant and polished.

"Together Again" is another highlight, with Pesci delivering a heartfelt performance that showcases his range as a vocalist. The track's arrangement, featuring a more subdued and emotive backing, allows Pesci's voice to take center stage, revealing a tender and introspective side to his musical persona.

Lyrically, the album consists of covers, so Pesci's role is more interpretive, bringing his own flair and nuances to well-known songs. His ability to connect with the material and make each song his own is evident throughout the album, offering listeners a fresh perspective on familiar tunes.

In retrospect, "Little Joe Sure Can Sing!" is an intriguing footnote in Joe Pesci's illustrious career, offering a glimpse into his multifaceted talents beyond acting. The album serves as a reminder of the close relationship between the worlds of music and acting, and how artists can often surprise audiences with their versatility.

Overall, "Little Joe Sure Can Sing!" stands as a testament to Joe Pesci's artistic range, showcasing his ability to tackle a musical project with the same charisma and skill that he brings to his film roles. The album is a curiosity within the landscape of celebrity music projects, providing an enjoyable and unexpected listening experience for fans of Pesci and classic pop music alike.
