Description

"Colors" is the thirteenth studio album by American musician Beck, released on October 13, 2017, by Capitol Records. The album marks a significant departure from the somber, introspective tone of Beck's previous album, "Morning Phase," which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2015. Instead, "Colors" is a vibrant, upbeat collection of songs that showcase Beck's versatility and knack for crafting infectious pop melodies.

The production of "Colors" was a collaborative effort between Beck and Greg Kurstin, a highly sought-after producer known for his work with artists like Adele, Sia, and Foo Fighters. Kurstin's influence is evident throughout the album, with its polished, radio-friendly sound and meticulous attention to detail. The recording process for "Colors" spanned several years, with Beck and Kurstin working on the album intermittently between other projects.

The album opens with the title track, "Colors," a buoyant, synth-driven song that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The song's infectious energy and catchy chorus make it an immediate standout. This is followed by "Seventh Heaven," a track that combines jangly guitars with a driving beat, creating a sense of euphoria that permeates much of the album.

One of the album's highlights is "Up All Night," a song that perfectly encapsulates the carefree, celebratory spirit of "Colors." With its funky bassline, shimmering synths, and anthemic chorus, "Up All Night" is a quintessential party anthem that showcases Beck's ability to blend different genres seamlessly. The song was well-received by critics and fans alike, and it was even nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Another notable track is "Dear Life," which features a piano-driven melody reminiscent of classic rock and a chorus that echoes the existential musings of Beck's earlier work. The song's introspective lyrics provide a moment of reflection amidst the album's otherwise upbeat atmosphere.

"Wow," one of the album's lead singles, is a genre-blending track that combines hip-hop beats with psychedelic flourishes. The song's playful lyrics and infectious hook make it a standout, and its experimental nature is a testament to Beck's willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories.

"Dreams," another single from the album, is a high-energy track with a driving rhythm and soaring chorus. Originally released in 2015, the song was reworked for inclusion on "Colors" and remains one of the album's most memorable moments. Its infectious energy and catchy melody make it a perfect representation of the album's overall vibe.

The album closes with "Fix Me," a more subdued track that provides a fitting end to the record. With its gentle acoustic guitar and introspective lyrics, "Fix Me" serves as a reminder of Beck's ability to convey deep emotion through his music, even amidst the album's predominantly upbeat sound.

"Colors" received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its vibrant production and catchy melodies. Some critics, however, noted that the album's polished, radio-friendly sound marked a departure from the more experimental and eclectic nature of Beck's earlier work. Despite this, "Colors" was a commercial success, reaching the top ten in several countries and earning Beck two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

In conclusion, "Colors" is a testament to Beck's versatility as an artist and his ability to reinvent himself with each new release. The album's infectious energy, catchy melodies, and polished production make it a standout in Beck's discography and a must-listen for fans of pop and alternative music alike.
