Description

"Girl In Red - Beginnings" compiles the early works of Marie Ulven, known by her stage name girl in red, capturing the essence of her DIY bedroom pop sound that has resonated with a global audience. This collection, which includes tracks from her first two EPs "chapter 1" (2018) and "chapter 2" (2019), showcases Ulven's talent for crafting intimate, lo-fi indie pop songs that delve into themes of mental health, identity, and queer love. "Beginnings" stands out for its raw emotionality, honest lyricism, and the minimalistic production that has become synonymous with girl in red's music. This review will explore the compilation's production, thematic elements, musicality, and its impact within the indie and LGBTQ+ music communities.

The compilation begins with "i wanna be your girlfriend," a track that immediately establishes girl in red's signature sound with its simple guitar riff, bedroom-produced aesthetic, and candid lyrics about unrequited love and queer identity. The song's directness and vulnerability set the tone for a body of work that is both personal and universally relatable.

A standout track, "we fell in love in october," captures the euphoria and tenderness of young love against the backdrop of autumnal imagery. The song's warm, melodic instrumentation and Ulven's heartfelt vocals create a sense of nostalgia and longing, highlighting her ability to evoke complex emotions through her music.

The production across "Beginnings" is characterized by its lo-fi quality and minimalist approach, allowing Ulven's songwriting and emotive vocals to take center stage. The use of reverb, layered vocals, and subtle synths adds depth to the tracks, creating a soundscape that is both intimate and expansive.

Thematically, "Beginnings" explores a wide range of topics, from the joys and pains of love to struggles with mental health and the search for identity. Ulven's lyrics are notable for their honesty and specificity, addressing her experiences as a young queer woman in a way that resonates with listeners navigating similar journeys.

Musically, the compilation is a testament to girl in red's skill in crafting catchy, emotionally resonant indie pop songs with limited resources. The tracks are marked by their melodic guitar lines, understated percussion, and the occasional use of electronic elements, showcasing Ulven's versatility as a musician and her ability to convey a wide range of emotions through her music.

In the context of girl in red's discography, "Beginnings" serves as an important introduction to her artistry and the themes that define her music. The compilation's reception highlights its impact as a work that has connected with a diverse audience, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, for its representation and heartfelt exploration of queer experiences.
