Description

Clinic, the Liverpool-based indie rock band known for their unique blend of post-punk and psychedelic sounds, returns with their eighth studio album, "Wheeltappers And Shunters." Released in 2019, this album showcases the band's ability to create a sonic landscape that is both familiar and refreshingly innovative.

From the opening track, "Laughing Cavalier," it becomes evident that Clinic has not lost their touch. The song immediately grabs your attention with its infectious bassline and catchy guitar riffs. The band's signature use of vintage keyboards and distorted vocals adds an element of nostalgia, while still sounding contemporary.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Rubber Bullets." This song perfectly encapsulates Clinic's ability to create a dark and brooding atmosphere. The haunting vocals, combined with the pulsating rhythm section, create a sense of unease that is both captivating and unsettling. It's a prime example of the band's ability to create a sonic experience that is both haunting and hypnotic.

Another highlight of "Wheeltappers And Shunters" is the track "Complex." This song showcases Clinic's knack for crafting infectious melodies that stick with you long after the album has ended. The combination of jangly guitars, driving drums, and catchy hooks make it an instant earworm. The lyrics, which touch on themes of isolation and societal pressures, add depth to an already captivating track.

Throughout the album, Clinic experiments with different musical styles and influences, creating a diverse and dynamic listening experience. Tracks like "Flying Fish" and "Be Yourself/Year of the Sadist" showcase the band's ability to seamlessly blend genres, incorporating elements of garage rock, post-punk, and even hints of krautrock. This versatility keeps the album fresh and engaging from start to finish.

Lyrically, "Wheeltappers And Shunters" explores themes of disillusionment, societal critique, and personal introspection. The band's cryptic and poetic lyrics leave room for interpretation, allowing listeners to connect with the songs on a personal level. The introspective nature of the lyrics is complemented by the atmospheric and sometimes melancholic instrumentation, creating a cohesive and immersive listening experience.

Clinic's attention to detail is evident throughout the album, both in the songwriting and production. The band's meticulous approach to crafting each track ensures that every instrument and vocal line serves a purpose. The production, handled by the band themselves, is clean and polished, allowing each element to shine through without overpowering the overall sound.

"Wheeltappers And Shunters" is a testament to Clinic's longevity and ability to evolve while staying true to their unique sound. The album showcases the band's musical prowess and their ability to create a sonic landscape that is both captivating and thought-provoking. With its infectious melodies, haunting atmospheres, and introspective lyrics, this album is a must-listen for fans of indie rock and post-punk.

In conclusion, Clinic's "Wheeltappers And Shunters" is a strong addition to their discography. The album showcases the band's ability to create a diverse and engaging listening experience, with its blend of post-punk, psychedelic, and garage rock influences. From the infectious hooks to the haunting atmospheres, each track on the album is a testament to Clinic's musical prowess and their ability to captivate listeners. If you're a fan of indie rock that pushes boundaries and challenges conventions, "Wheeltappers And Shunters" is an album you won't want to miss.
